Suitable for FY2 - ST2 trainees who have successfully completed a RCS Basic Surgical Skills course, this one day workshop provides exposure to the theoretical principles and practical techniques of gastrointestinal anastomosis.
It gives an opportunity to perform a variety of surgical procedures on cadaveric tissue with modern anastomotic technologies under the guidance of Consultant Surgeons, with a high trainer to trainee ratio. It then places these techniques within the context of surgical practice and identifies clinical situations where a deeper knowledge of these relevant aspects leads to improved peri-operative care.
The workshop has been designed to introduce surgical trainees to more advanced surgical skills in the controlled workshop environment, simulating those operative situations in which they would be expected to be proficient when performing duties as a Registrar on call.
The workshop will follow the format of structured training courses that form an integral part of current postgraduate surgical training, and the sessions are delivered over a one day course to maximise learning opportunities with minimum impact on study leave allowance.
The workshop is intensively taught and has an emphasis on detailed personal feedback to identify areas of strength and areas for development. Importantly, the skills obtained will be directly applicable to participants' clinical practice on return to their workplace for all surgical specialties but in particular those currently placed in gastrointestinal surgical units.
