The Early Years Consultant Network (EYCN) was founded in 2019 by a visionary group of colorectal surgeons with a clear and pressing purpose: to support, guide, and empower consultants through the critical early years of independent practice. Recognising the unique challenges faced during the transition from training to consultancy, EYCN was established to ensure that no early-career consultant feels unprepared, unsupported, or isolated.

Our mission is to foster a dynamic and inclusive professional community where newly appointed colorectal consultants can thrive. Through mentorship, peer support, and strategic development opportunities, we aim to nurture confidence, competence, and leadership in the next generation of surgical professionals.

EYCN provides a structured platform for sharing experience, navigating the practical realities of consultant life—from job planning and handling complaints to inquests and litigation—and promoting professional growth. With the backing of the ACPGBI Executive and a network of like-minded peers, we are building a strong foundation for long-term success in consultant practice.

Our Mission

To empower newly appointed colorectal consultants with the mentorship, community, and resources they need to thrive—both professionally and personally—in the first five years of independent practice.

Who We Are

EYCN is led by a committee of early-career colorectal consultants from across the UK and Ireland, with full support from the ACPGBI Executive. Together, we aim to cultivate a community that shares experience, promotes development, and champions wellbeing.

Working Together
