Biography

Mr Alastair Moses Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon BSc (Honours), MBChB (Commendation), FRCS Ed, FRCS Ed (General Surgery) Alastair Moses was appointed as a Consultant General Surgeon with a sub-specialty interest in Colorectal Surgery to NHS Tayside, and Clinical Teacher for the University of Dundee Medical School, in 2009. He works as an Emergency General Surgeon at Ninewells Hospital EGS Unit and Major Trauma Centre. His elective (planned) surgical practice encompasses: Colorectal Surgery (with major procedures for colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease); Proctology (surgery for conditions of the anus and rectum); and General Surgery (gallbladder removal, abdominal wall and groin hernia repair, excision biopsy and skin lesion surgery). He specialises in open and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and gastrointestinal upper and lower tract endoscopy. Alastair graduated from Glasgow University Medical School with Commendation in 1992. After rotating through Junior and Senior House Officer Posts in General Surgery and Surgical Specialties, in 1995 he was appointed to the traditional West of Scotland Junior Surgical Registrars’ Training Scheme. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh by examination and subsequently became a Research Fellow in the University Department of Surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. There he conducted research and was the study site co-ordinator for a clinical trial looking to reverse weight loss in cancer patients. He was awarded a National Training Number and appointed to the West of Scotland Higher Surgical Training Scheme for General Surgery in 2001. Alastair completed his training in 2008, with a sub-specialty interest in Colorectal Surgery, at the Edinburgh Colorectal Unit under the tutelage of Professor Malcolm Dunlop and colleagues (Certificate of Completion of Training and entry to the GMC’s Specialist Register). Post CCT Alastair pursued further training and experience in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery with Miklos Kassai and Ahmad Nassar before appointment to NHS Tayside as a Consultant General Surgeon in 2009. He is a designated member of NHS Tayside’s Multi Disciplinary Teams for: Colorectal Cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Abdominal Wall Hernia. He is locally accredited to perform Bowel Screening Colonoscopy. Alastair has a long term interest in Surgical Training and served two terms as East of Scotland Training Programme Director for General Surgery (2017-2023). He was a Panel Member for UK National Selection to Specialty Training General / Vascular Surgery (2018 – 2023), and served a term as a Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, General Surgery, Surgical Specialty Board Member (2021-2023). He continues as an NHS Tayside Medical Appraiser (2016- ).
