Biography

Pawan Mathur is a General, Colorectal & Laparoscopic Surgeon with an NHS practice based at Barnet & Chase Farm Hospitals, and private consultation rooms at Spire Bushey Hospital, The Wellington Diagnostic Centre & the Platinum Medical Centre, Wellington Hospital and Chase Lodge Hospital. Mr Mathur is primarily a General surgeon and hence has a broad experience in the management of common conditions such as hernias of all types, gallstones and abdominal pain. His specialist interest is in Colorectal Conditions such as haemorrhoids (piles) anal fissures, anal fistulae, ulcerative colitis/ Crohns Disease, Pelvic Floor conditions and Colorectal Cancer. The usual initial investigation for these conditions is Endoscopy, which is an internal investigation with a lighted instrument. Mr. Mathur has undergone advanced training in endoscopy at the Wolfson Institute, St.Marks Hospital and in Singapore General Hospital. He has gained the vast experience needed to make this as smooth and comfortable as possible. Disorders of the Pelvic Floor such as incontinence, rectal prolapse, evacuatory disorders and constipation. may require detailed investigation and management. Mr Mathur has undergone specialist training in these disorders and is the Clinical Lead for this service at Barnet Hospital. Mr Mathur is proficient in the Stapled haemorrhoidectomy technique for treatment of large haemorrhoids Colorectal Cancer is also a main area of his expertise and as Clinical Lead for Lower Gastrointestinal Cancer at Barnet Hospital, he has developed the policies for the management of colorectal cancer within the Trust. His surgical approach is primarily Laparoscopic (Keyhole Surgery) for procedures such as laparoscopic hernia, laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder), laparoscopic incisional hernia repair. He has developed the Laparoscopic Colorectal service in the hospitals he works at and undertakes surgery for the majority of bowel conditions including cancer using this technique. Other minimally invasive procedures he is experienced in include TEMS (Trans anal Endoscopic Microsurgery for rectal lesions) and Robotic Surgery. Mr Mathur undertakes Robotic Colorectal Team at the Wellington Hospital for patients with rectal cancer, rectal prolapse and certain pelvic floor conditions. Mr. Mathur appreciates that some of the symptoms associated with his specialty areas can be embarrassing but his approach to his practice is to create a welcoming atmosphere and to treat all patients with respect in a sympathetic manner. This minimizes the discomfort patient’s feel and encourages a stress-free experience. He is also fluent in Hindi and Urdu and has a working knowledge of Punjabi and Gujarati Mr Mathur qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical school in 1990. His surgical training involved working in several hospitals in the London area on the North West Thames Surgical Rotation. During this time, he undertook a postgraduate research degree at the Royal Marsden and Chelsea & Westminster Hospitals and was awarded a MS thesis for his work examining the role of manipulating tumour blood supply on chemotherapeutic drug uptake in Colorectal Liver Metastases. He maintains an active interest in surgical research and continues to publish in peer-reviewed journals. He is currently the Principal Investigator on a variety of surgical clinical trials based at Barnet Hospital. He gained specialist colorectal experience at St Mark's Hospital and on a one-year programme in the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Singapore General Hospital. Pawan Mathur is married with 2 children and lives in St Albans. He is a club level Squash player and enjoys walking.
