Biography
I am a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in the University Hospital of Wales, with a specialist interest in colorectal cancer and pelvic floor surgery. I have an interest in Colorectal cancer and pelvic floor/LARS. I went to medical school in Cardiff, University Hospital of Wales, going onto general surgical training in London and Wales. I gained an MD from Imperial College, London. I went to Oxford for a pelvic floor fellowship. I am the Secretary for the Pelvic Floor Society as well as a Trustee for the MASIC foundation.
As part of my interest in improving standards of care for pelvic floor patients I established a multidisciplinary Pelvic Floor team meeting in Cardiff and Cwm Taf University Health Board.
I am an honorary senior lecturer in Cardiff University and have an active research interest in cancer / pelvic floor, in particular translational aspects and outcomes following in surgery.
I am the Chief Investigator for the POLARiS study, assessing optimal management for patient with bowel dysfunction after rectal cancer surgery. Previous studies which I have led on are the CLOSE IT study looking at timings of closure of ileostomy after rectal cancer surgery, AFFINITY study (investigating acceptability of faecal transplant for Bowel dysfunction after ileostomy closure) , PARiS (Physiotherapy for Anterior Resection Syndrome) and PerMet (Patient Perspectives on Peritoneal Metastasis Treatments). I was a co-investigator for HART (Hughes Abdominal Repair Trial) which is a multicentre RCT designed to assess the incidence of incisional hernias in patients with a midline incision for colorectal cancer surgery.
