Biography

Charles Maxwell-Armstrong qualified from Bristol in 1991. He then moved to Nottingham to complete his Basic and Higher Surgical training as well as higher degree. His DM was in colorectal cancer immunotherapy. It led to a number of publications and he was ultimately awarded a Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. His Fellowship year was as an RSO at St Mark's Hospital, London and Mt Sinai Hospital, Toronto. He was appointed Consultant Colorectal surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in 2002. His current interests include laparoscopic colorectal surgery, pelvic floor disorders and medical education. Whilst in post he has supervised a PhD, 2 DMs, an MSc and 14 BMedSci degrees. He spent 7 years as Colorectal Service lead within the Directorate and ran year 3 of the medical course for Nottingham University for 5 years. In 2011 he was made an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor by Nottingham University. He sat on and chaired the Multidisciplinary Clinical Committee between 2011 and 2017. In July 2016 he became Honorary Assistant Secretary of ACPGBI, and two years later Honorary Secretary. He is currently President-Elect of ACPGBI. Interests outside surgery include rugby, cycling and skiing. He is married to Anne Thomas, Professor of Cancer Therapeutics at Leicester University.
