Biography
Stephen is a NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Leeds (UK) and a Speciality Registrar in General Surgery & Coloproctology. He undertakes his surgical training in Yorkshire, alongside building a programme of research in bowel research, surgical care, and health technology. As an applied health researcher, he is experienced in the design and evaluation of new surgical innovation, with expertise in clinical trials, mixed-methods, consensus, and qualitative research. He works closely with industry and cross-faculty collaborators in search of creative solutions for unmet surgical challenges. He was awarded his PhD from the University of Leeds, where he was supported by a NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship to explore novel treatments for bowel dysfunction after surgery. His work in this area was recognised by several awards, including the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) Hunterian Lectureship (Hunterian Professor 2023). Stephen chairs the White Rose Surgical Collaborative in Yorkshire and promotes enthusiasm in bowel research through his national role as RCS England & BRUK Associate Speciality Lead in Colorectal Surgery. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal Trials, a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of Colorectal Disease and British Journal of Surgery, and sits on the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit Funding Committee.
