Biography

Jonathan M Gilbert, MS, FRCS President of the Section of Coloproctology of the Royal Society of Medicine, 2012 - 13 Jonathan M Gilbert is a Consultant General Surgeon. He retired from the NHS at Wexham Park Hospital, Slough in 2011. He continues in private practice and also serves the NHS by seeing patients at the private hospitals through the 'Chose & Book scheme. His main interests are colorectal and laparoscopic surgery. He graduated from The London Hospital (before it was ‘Royal’) in 1971 and obtained the FRCS in 1977 and the MS in 1984. This was by thesis entitled ‘The chemotherapy of experimental colorectal cancer’ and followed three years of research with the MRC while it was still at Northwick Park. He was the Arris and Gale lecturer and medallist for the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1985 on the basis of this work. Specialist training was undertaken at the Westminster Hospital, the Royal Marsden and St Mark’s Hospital, (while it was still in the City Road!). His research interests have been clinically based and current interests include the use of robotics in laparoscopic surgery and the introduction of devices into surgical practice. He has just completed a career-long study lasting 22 years of colonoscopic screening of patients with a family history of colorectal cancer ( Ann R Coll Surg Engl, 2013, 95, 586-590 ) These topics formed the basis of his Presidential address.
