How to Write a Manuscript course
First deadline 30 March 2026
18 March 2026
(Last updated 18 Mar 2026)
The BJS Institute in partnership with the University of Edinburgh will be running the How to Write a Manuscript course commencing in September 2026.
As part of the ongoing commitment to our BJS Partners, the BJS Foundation will financially support one nominee from ACPGBI to participate in this course.
You will find a course descriptor Document outlining the course and programme, the expectations, key dates, entry requirements and the application process.
Please find a link here to a video which explains the application process. It is crucial that your nominee reviews these thoroughly and agrees to all commitments and expectations before proceeding.
To streamline the process and ensure all nominees meet eligibility criteria, we are implementing a pre-check of supporting documentation. Nominees will be required to submit the necessary documentation prior to starting their application. This will allow us to address any concerns early, confirm eligibility and ensure that you have the opportunity to nominate an alternative candidate if needed. This process is designed to minimise dropouts and maximise the value of your partner benefits.
Key Checklist for Nominees:
When identifying a suitable nominee, please ensure they meet the following criteria:
- Time Commitment: be able to set aside a minimum of 15 hours per week between 21 September and 3 November 2026 (total of 100 hours) to complete all learning activities and assessment. The nominee is required to engage with learning activities on a regular basis throughout each week that the course runs. Failure to engage with learning activities and assessment to a satisfactory level may result in the nominee failing, or being withdrawn, from the course.
- Qualifications: Hold an accredited medical degree (MBChB or equivalent) or a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, in a subject related to healthcare, medical writing or publishing.
- English Language Requirements: As all teaching is in English, nominees must be able to prove that their English language abilities are at a high enough level to study at a postgraduate degree level. Nominees need to meet English language requirements with one of the following: being a national of a majority English-speaking country; an English language test that is no more than two years old; a degree (no more than five years old) that was taught and assessed in English; certain professional qualifications. It is essential that nominees check the University of Edinburgh English language requirements here before submitting an application.
- Application Start Deadline: Nominees must begin their application no later than Monday 4 May. Failure to meet this deadline will result in forfeiting their place in the September course.
