Consultation closes on the 1 August 2025

Dear All,

We have been collaborating with NHS England to update the H Chapter of OPCS, ensuring it reflects current clinical practice. This initiative is part of a broader review of the existing OPCS codes.

As a result of this work, a consultation on the proposed changes is now underway. Full details are provided below. The consultation will remain open until 1 August 2025, and we encourage you to review the proposed updates and share your feedback.

Please pay particular attention to codes relevant to your area of practice. If you have suggestions for additional changes, you may submit them via the webform linked below. Note that unless specified in the consultation document, existing codes will remain unchanged.

Best wishes,

Elaine Burns
Chair, Research and Audit Committee

On 1 April 2026, the updates to the OPCS-4 Classification of Interventions and Procedures – version 4.11 will be implemented across the NHS.

OPCS-4 is an information standard published under section 250 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012 (Ref DCB0084). OPCS-4 is updated every 3 years to reflect current NHS clinical practice to support aggregate data for statistical purposes and reimbursement.

As usual practice, the Terminology and Classifications Service at NHS England have produced a draft summary of the core changes between OPCS-4.10 and OPCS-4.11. All users of the classification are invited to review and feedback on these changes.

The draft summary of changes is available for comment using the feedback form on Delen – our collaboration workspace.

Following feedback and subject to approval by the Data Alliance Partnership Board (DAPB) the OPCS-4.11 Information Standard Notice (ISN) will be published in November 2025 in readiness for NHS implementation on 1 April 2026.

Further information about the OPCS-4 classification and provisional dates for release of OPCS-4.11 products can be found on the OPCS-4 page on Delen.

Please submit your feedback by 1 August 2025.

Kind regards,
