About ACPGBI

Dear Members,

The ACPGBI Proctology and Education & Training committees are exploring the possibility of setting up a series of UK wide proctology fellowships.

There is a recognised deficiency in quality proctology training and there are believed to wide variations across the UK in its practice too.

Post/peri-CCT fellowships may go some way in helping to correct these issues.

The ACPGBI are looking to identify potential host units. As a first step we would like to know if your unit would, in theory, be willing to host such a fellowship and if there is the desired case mix and volume.

We would suggest that the host unit should be able to offer the following.

  • At least one weekly clinic comprised substantially of proctology
  • At least one weekly theatre list comprised substantially of proctology
  • A proctology referral practice is desirable but not crucial
  • Availability of advanced proctology techniques (some of the following):
    • Fistula: LIFT, flap, VAAFT, Laser, plug
    • Fissure: flap
    • Piles: Ligation procedures, thermal procedures
    • Pilonidal disease: off midline closure techniques, laser, epsit
  • Some tertiary activity in proctology

If you are interested in becoming a host unit for a proctology fellowship, please contact Mr Gregory Thomas, Chair of the ACPGBI Proctology committee gregorythomas1@nhs.net
