Updates from the National Consultant Information Programme (NCIP), exciting news for colorectal surgeons

If we don't know our outcome data across the whole of our surgical practice, then how can we be sure we are doing the best for our patients? If we don't know how our figures compare with our colleagues then how do we know they are OK?
The National Consultant Information Programme (NCIP) aims to address this by feeding back contemporaneous data to clinicians in the context of their peers. Its primary use is in appraisal, though Clinical Directors can use it to ensure that their are no issues within their units. It can also be used to reduce the administrative burden of M+M. Unlike the Clinical Outcome Programme 10 years ago the data is not in the public domain, and can only be seen by the individual surgeon, CD and MD. As yet it is only available in England.
I would urge those colorectal surgeons who have not logged in to NCIP to at least try it once. I think once you've done this you will see how it can improve your practice going forward, save you time and most importantly reassure you that your outcomes are as good as they can be relative to other surgeons, and that you are doing the best for your patients
