Expressions of interest sought for training centres for ACPGBI Intuitive Robotic Colorectal Training Fellowships

The ACPGBI are delighted to announce that we have received funding from Intuitive Surgery to deliver a number of robotic fellowships.

ACPGBI are to determine the distribution of the funding, including the selection of training centres and the appointment of fellows after competitive application.

The ACPGBI plan to appoint up to 4 fellows, each for a 6 month period, between selected training centres.

In the first instance ACPGBI are seeking expressions of interest from training centres.

Please see the training unit criteria in the table below:

Robotic training unit criteria

Essential

Access to Intuitive Da Vinci robotic platform

An established robotic practice with outcome data collection

Access to simulation training at the start of the fellowship (to be completed to a satisfactory standard before starting any in vivo training)

Evidence/confirmation that the fellowship will not take training away from or displace deanery trainees (letter of confirmation from Deanery TPD)

Named trainers with a proven track record of training delivery

An outline of the unit’s current practice, including the number of robotic trainers and trainees/fellows and whether the unit also has deanery trainees or locally employed doctors

Proposed weekly timetable for the fellow

Provide numbers of expected robotic colorectal resections during the followship period (to demonstrate a log of cases during a similar time frame)

Desirable

Second console to support training

At least 2 named trainers of the fellow

Evidence of training of previous fellows i.e. a track record of providing training

Demonstration of other opportunities for the fellow including research, audit and teaching

The funding from ACPGBI will pay for a standard full-time post commensurate with the trainee’s year of training. It is expected that the fellow will have a predominantly elective practice. On call activity in addition to the fellowship practice would be funded by the host centre.

The on-call component should not be detrimental to the elective component of the fellowship. Any on call rota commitment needs to be demonstrated by the host centre.

Application should be in the form of a letter to the ACPGBI Honorary Secretary, addressing all of the points in the fellowship criteria with supporting data.

The closing date for applications is 17:00 GMT Wednesday 31 January 2024 with a plan for unit selection shortly after followed by advertising for fellows.
