The ACPGBI Medical Students Steering Group have been granted the Royal College of Surgeons’ Grassroots in Surgery funding.

This scheme allows organisations to actively address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion issues in surgery. Through this scheme, we hope to deliver national events aimed at motivating students in underserved regions to consider surgery as a potential career choice.

It has been well-established that medicine is an area that has long struggled with inclusion and diversity. There are a variety of reasons for this, one of them being the requirements to successfully gain entry into medical school - which may be easier to achieve for some groups of students over others.

Thus, we hope to bring an event to students to increase their understanding of medicine as a career and to bridge the gap that may disadvantage students from poorer socio-economic backgrounds by providing them with experiences they may not have had the chance to do previously.

The funding granted by the RCS - £4,000 in total - will allow the ACPGBI Medical Students Steering Group to put on these events across different regions in England throughout the year. Details and feedback relating to these events will appear in future newsletters.
