Following on from the success of our #auguts campaign which has seen great engagement and support from the public and increased our following significantly in September, BRUK will be looking at the nature and effect of dietary advice accessed by patients via the internet and social media.

The internet and social media are extremely powerful tools and often the first places someone who has been newly diagnosed with bowel cancer or bowel disease goes to in search of information about their condition. Unfortunately, it’s not always the most reliable source unless you know where to look. The enormous reach of these digital information portals, coupled with sophisticated fake news and active scams mean that patients can easily access both high quality and dubious advice without necessarily being able to discern the difference. It goes without saying that this advice can affect your health for good or bad.

We are very interested in how this information affects patients both positively and negatively, so we have asked the BRUK PaRT network, for their help with a short survey.

And now we would like to ask the ACPN for their help….

We would really appreciate you emailing us with as many examples of both high quality and dubious advice that you can find to our public relations and media consultant Neil Boom neil.boom@greshampr.co.uk who will be collating the results in preparation for a webinar/podcast.

If you could send your examples with the URL and search term used to Neil by 16/9/22 it would be a fantastic help.

We hope you will find the activity interesting, fun and inclusive, something you can do easily either on your own, with family and friends or colleagues during a coffee or lunch break.

The examples you send us will be followed up by one of our team and together with the survey results shared (in a non-attributable form) via a webinar/video podcast in October/November where we hope you will join us together with panel of experts to do a bit of myth busting about diet and bowel disease and come away with some up to date information and top tips to share with your patients for future information searches!

Thank you very much for your help and best wishes,

Interim CEO
