Mr Sharad Karandikar

Education and training:
Sharad graduated from the University of Bombay in 1989 with distinction in Surgery. His initial surgical training in surgery and allied specialties was in King Edward Memorial hospital in Mumbai and Tata Memorial hospital (tertiary cancer centre in Mumbai). After completing his clinical lecturer in gastrointestinal surgery in Mumbai he undertook specialist registrar training in south Wales and worked in units in Cardiff and Swansea. He undertook a traveling fellowship to Cleveland clinic before being appointed as a colorectal surgeon in Princess of Wales hospital, Bridgend in 2002. He has been in the Heart of England foundation NHS trust as a colorectal surgeon since 2005.
Mr Sharad Karandikar is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. He serves on Education and Training committee and the Colonoscopy subcommittee of the association. He has been awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the Association of Colon and Rectal Surgeons of India for his contributions to development of colorectal surgery in India and is on their examination board.
Current Clinical Role:
Sharad offers elective and emergency general surgery in the Heart of England Foundation NHS trust hospitals (Birmingham Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital). He has been a cancer lead the cancer multidisciplinary team in Heartlands and is a trainer on the LOREC programme.He is a member of the inflammatory bowel disease team and offers surgery of complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Sharad has been a active member of the Pelvic floor service since its conception and works closely with the urogynaecology teams. The Pelvic floor team offers treatments for obstructive defaecation and faecal incontinence. He is an accredited colonoscopist and has been a part of the Bowel Cancer Screening team since its launch in the region since 2006.
Research, Training and Publications
During Sharad’s surgical training he submitted his thesis to University of Mumbai and was awarded the MS degree in 1992. His research interests include bowel cancer screening, imaging in colorectal surgery, outcomes of surgery and endoscopy.
Sharad is a keen surgical and endoscopy trainer and is regular faculty on courses for surgeons nationally and in India. He is an examiner for the MRCS for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
He regularly presents scientific work at national and international meeting especially on colorectal cancer. He also is invited to lecture regularly nationally and in India. He has published in the past and continues to supervise his trainees to contribute to peer reviewed journals.
