IBD Surgical Outcome Registry

Assoc. Prof Fraser Smith

Mr Smith graduated with an MB ChB from the University of Glasgow in 2000. As an undergraduate, he also completed a 2 year Honours Bachelor of Science Degree. He then completed his basic and specialist surgical training in Southern Ireland after which he undertook two prestigious 1-year colorectal fellowships. The first was in Professor Ara Darzi’s Unit in St Mary’s Hospital, London and the second was in the world famous Department of Colorectal Surgery at The Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
These fellowships incorporated specialisation in both open and laparoscopic general and colorectal surgery. In addition to major surgery for cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, Mr Smith specialised in surgery for haemorrhoids, anal fissures and fistulas, faecal incontinence, hernia repair, colonoscopy and learned the latest techniques from world experts.
Now as an established consultant in the UK, Mr Smith works at The Royal Liverpoool Hospital and Spire Liverpool Hospital and has continued to perform a wide range of general and coloproctological surgery. He is highly experienced in investigating and treating rectal bleeding, colonoscopy and the treatment of haemorrhoids. He has additionally been involved in pioneering new surgical techniques aimed at improving the outcome for patients. He was one of the first wave of surgeons in the UK to complete training in and perform transanal TME surgery for rectal cancer. He is also a recognised expert in non-operative management of rectal cancer – so-called “Watch and Wait” treatment. He also has a specialist interest in surgery for rectal cancer that can help patients avoid a permanent colostomy bag.
In addition to his surgical commitments, Mr Smith has a strong interest in surgical research, in particular investigating minimally invasive and non-operative (watch and wait) treatment for rectal cancer. Currently Mr Smith has 33 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is frequently invited to speak at both national and international meetings.
