H J Gallagher is the clinical director of general surgery at the RVI Newcastle, where he specialises in laparoscopic colorectal, traumatology and abdominal wall reconstruction surgery. He has an active educational profile running national and international courses in laparoscopic colorectal , trauma, inguinal hernia and abdominal reconstructive surgery. He has a very busy emergency practice confirmed by the NELA audit as performing the most laparotomies in Newcastle and at the Northern Major Trauma centre since its inception.
While in Newcastle he has innovated in both the domains of laparoscopic colorectal surgery and complex abdominal wall surgery. Previously he mentored other consultants extensively as one of the ALS recognized national mentors and subsequently contributed to the Lapco process. He has also provided one of the RCS(Eng) sponsored laparoscopic rectal cancer surgery fellowships for the previous 7 years.
A particular interest is in the training of senior fellows. This interest in operative training was substantiated by a recent paper for the ESCP conference demonstrating that in his fellowship unit 93% of <T4 colorectal cancer is resected laparoscopically , with a conversion rate of 3.5% and 92% performed by the senior fellows under direct supervision. This neatly summarises his enthusiasm for laparoscopic surgery and training.
Recent projects have included convening the worlds first biological abdominal reconstruction course, running triannnual European hernia training courses, incepting and organising the BAPS approved national paediatric trauma training course, and providing triannnual adult ACTS cadaveric trauma courses.
He engages widely within his chosen areas of expertise and within the last year been an invited speaker at the main conferences for his range of specialties ACPGBI, ASGBI, BHS and GESTS.
