I have been a consultant At Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust for more than thirteen years. It has a population of 420 000 and I have been instrumental in establishing it as one of the premier colorectal units in the country. Since appointment I have changed how we deliver our acute service along with the establishment of a surgical assessment unit (2003). I introduced laparoscopic colorectal surgery to Bradford in 2003 and have established it as a major training centre for this surgery (LAPCO centre). I have pioneered enhanced recovery and established a nurse specialist role in the hospital.
My personal interests are IBD and increasingly, functional colorectal surgery, whilst continuing to perform surgery for colorectal cancer. Over the last three years I have performed over 200 colonic resections and have established a Colorectal Fellow post. I have established joint clinics with both gastroenterologists and urogynaecologists providing combined care of patients; this has been very favourably reviewed by patients. I have established Bradford as a major centre for training in laparoscopic immersion courses in colorectal and hernia surgery as well as LAPCO TT courses.
For the last two years I have worked closely with NHS improvement and have an intimate knowledge of the changes occurring in the NHS. I have developed a special interest in survivorship after colorectal cancer surgery and have forged close links with Macmillan and other cancer charities.
