IBD Surgical Outcome Registry

Mr Michael Kelly

I am a consultant general surgeon with a major sub-speciality interest in colorectal surgery at Leicester for 24 years, having retired from the NHS in October 2009.

I qualified in 1970 from Cambridge University having had done clinical training at
St George's Hospital Medical School, London. I hold a first class honours degree from Cambridge University (1967), distinction in the Cambridge MB examination (1970) and won the Undergraduate Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecological prizes at my medical school.

In 1973, I passed the MRCP UK (the Physicians postgraduate qualification) and in 1974 I passed the FRCS (England), the surgeons postgraduate qualification. In 1978, I took the Cambridge Mastership of Surgery (MChir) degree and in 1981 was elected Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

As a surgical registrar, I worked my way through the specialities of Orthopaedics, Urology and Cardiothoracic surgery as well as General Surgery and as a Senior Registrar on the Bristol Exeter Rotation I worked in the specialities of Vascular, Paediatric, Upper GI, Colorectal and Urology, securing dual accreditation from the Royal College of Surgeons in both General Surgery and pure Urology. I was sent to St Mark's Hospital, in London, for specialist Colorectal training towards the end of my Senior Registrar period.

In 1985, I was appointed as a Consultant General Surgeon with a specialist colorectal interest to Leicester General Hospital (9 sessions) and to Loughborough General Hospital as General Surgeon (2 sessions).

Over the past 21 years I have become increasingly specialist and at retirement 90% of my work at Leicester General Hospital is colorectal whereas I was still running a relatively general surgical practice for minor and intermediate conditions at Loughborough (referring to colleagues major conditions, outside my speciality of colorectal. I continue in private practice.

I have done my three year stint on the Council of the Coloproctology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine (1991 to 1994) and I was its President-elect in 2 011-12. Currently I am on one of the sub-committees of the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland, ands attend its Council. I was Chairman of the Leicester Specialist Colorectal Group (1996-2006) and I am a Senior Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I have been one of the founder participants of the National Cancer Collaborative Project, and am now the National Lead Clinician For Bowel Cancer. I am the Leicestershire Chairman of the Hospital Consultants & Specialists Association (HCSA). I have taken all five modules of the Cardiff University Bond Solon Expert Witness Certificate (CUEWC), which was awarded in 2005, and am a Member of the Expert Witness Institute (MEWI, 2008). I have done update training on the October 2009 changes to the CPR and related documents. I regularly attend the Annual Bond Solon Conference of Expert Witnesses and have published a letter in the EWI Journal on the Jones v Kaney Case (2011).

My name is listed in the Registers of Expert Witness and GP & Specialist Info.
