It is a great pleasure to invite you to the ASGBI 2017 International Surgical Congress to be held in the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, Glasgow from Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5thMay. This will be the 8th time in the Association’s 96 year history that the annual meeting will be held in Glasgow. Scotland’s largest city is lively, full of character and is renowned for the friendliness and fun of the local population, so well characterised when the city hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014. With excellent access by train and air from all parts of the UK and abroad, Glasgow is an excellent venue to host the 2017 meeting.
The theme of the congress will be ‘Safer Surgery’, recognising the significant efforts and initiatives to ensure contemporary surgical services deliver safe and effective care. Recent years have seen hugely successful conferences in Belfast and Manchester under the presidency of Mr John Moorehead and I would wish to congratulate John on his outstanding leadership of the organisation over the past two years which has seen the Association going from strength to strength. Building on the success of recent congresses, there will continue to be a strong emphasis on high quality plenary sessions and symposia of relevance to established consultants and trainees with a major focus on elective and emergency general surgical care. Unscheduled surgical admissions in many institutions account for 60-70% of all hospital in-patient admissions, emphasising the importance of ensuring this care is delivered competently and safely. Our aim is to freshen aspects of the programme, incorporating educational updates and videos within short paper sessions, and ensuring the very best abstracts are presented in plenary sessions.
