Clinical Outcomes Publication 2019

2019 will be the seventh year of the Clinical Outcomes Publication, which started as a publication of outcomes for individual bowel cancer surgeons.

Clinical Outcomes Publication 2019

Since it started the focus has moved towards trust measures and new measures added each year are at trust level. The 90-day mortality results are for patients whose bowel cancer was diagnosed between April 2013 and March 2018, and then removed by surgery at a planned (not emergency) operation. The other measures are for patients whose bowel cancer was diagnosed between April 2017 and March 2018. Results are provided by the National Bowel Cancer Audit.

This year rate of major resection has been changed to be the proportion of patients with potentially “curable” disease who undergo major resection.  Unplanned return to theatre has been delayed in order to complete development work. The Clinical Outcomes Publication initiative started in December 2012, when NHS England asked surgical specialties to report outcomes for individual consultants. In response to this, in September 2013, the ACPGBI published the outcomes of individual surgeons operating on patients with bowel cancer in England
