Data Protection Policy

ACPGBI & NBOCAP needs to collect and use certain types of information about people with whom it deals in order to operate. These include current, past and prospective members, ACPGBI members and others with whom it communicates. This personal information must be dealt with properly however it is collected, recorded and used – whether on paper, in a computer, or recorded on other material – and there are safeguards to ensure this in the Data Protection Act 1998.

We regard the lawful and correct treatment of personal information by ACPGBI / NBOCAP as very important to maintaining confidence between those with whom we deal, our patients, the public, and ourselves. We ensure that our organisation treats personal information lawfully and correctly.

To this end we fully endorse and adhere to the principles of data protection, as enumerated in the Data Protection Act 1998.

The Data Protection Act requires all organisations which handle personal information to comply with a number of important principles regarding privacy and disclosure.

The Act states that anyone who processes personal information must comply with eight principles. These state that information must be:

  • Fairly and lawfully processed
  • Processed for limited purposes
  • Adequate, relevant and not excessive
  • Accurate and up to date
  • Not kept for longer than is necessary
  • Processed in line with individuals' rights
  • Secure
  • Not transferred to other countries without adequate protection
