This comprehensive single day symposium aims to cover all the issues relating to this controversial topic. The diversity of approaches existing for parastomal hernia testify to the continuing difficulty in finding a satisfactory solution to this common problem. There is an equal level of controversy in the area of how best to construct a stoma in order to avoid herniation. Advances in mesh related technology and laparoscopy have brought new approaches in groin and incisional hernia but parastomal hernia continues to present unique difficulties.
The course is aimed primarily at established consultants in colorectal surgery looking to create a lively exchange of views, establish current practice and map future directions. Following a cadaveric demonstration of the SMART technique participants will be invited to join a multi-centred randomized trial.
