The meeting will take place at the International Convention Centre, Broad Street, Birmingham B1 2WA www.theeicc.co.uk
It is hard to believe that our Association did not actually exist 20 years ago. How did we survive without it? Today, perhaps as never before, we live in exciting times, with changes in practice and the working environment that would make us unrecognisable to the senior surgeons around at the time of the birth of the ACPGBI. I hope we can reflect our changing world in our 2008 annual get-together. The programme will include discussion of topical ‘craft’ issues, controversial initiatives impacting (for good or ill) on our ability to deliver a service – and fun.
How do the data on preoperative short course radiotherapy stack up in national policy terms – given the accumulating data, will we all have to use it? Where will moves to centralise elements of our cancer work take us? Anal cancer has come first – next recurrence and advanced primary tumours? And what does ‘re-equipping’ surgeons really entail? – in laparoscopy and colonoscopy, as obvious examples. How do we and our specialty come across to the great British public? How do the professional communicators see us and report on our toils? And how do we communicate between ourselves in the complex business of multidisciplinary healthcare? What are the modern roles and responsibilities of our representative bodies – from ACPGBI, through the Association of Surgeons to the Royal Colleges? All questions that I daresay are never far from your consciousness!
The Programme Committee will strive to make the 2008 meeting memorable, useful and entertaining. See you there.
