ACPGBI 2012

Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme

ISCP was commissioned on a project basis by JCHST from 2003 until 2007. All four surgical colleges in the UK and all of the surgical specialty associations have been involved in this project, which has also consulted widely throughout the country. The syllabus and assessment system thus designed was approved by PMETB in 2007. Training in surgery based on this curriculum commenced in August 2007.

The programme has a number of different aspects –

  1. each JCHST specialty (general surgery; trauma and orthopaedics; cardiothoracic surgery; plastics surgery; otorhinolaryngology; oral and maxillofacial surgery; paediatric surgery; urology; neurosurgery) has produced a clear syllabus aiming to inform focussed surgical training programmes with defined standards and levels of progression
  2. professional skills and behaviour is emphasised as an essential component of good surgical practice
  3. the programme is competence based rather than time based
  4. clear and detailed methods of assessing competence in the work place have been developed
  5. an on line portfolio has been developed to record progress through training

The ACPGBI developed a syllabus in 2001 and the colorectal content in the ISCP syllabus has been designed to match this. Members of ACPGBI developed a number of colorectal DOPS and PBA assessments. Although ACPGBI’s interest lies mainly in colorectal specialist interest training, the training needs of the on call consultant surgeon of the future were defined in discussion between AUGIS, ACPGBI and ASGBI.
